Turn on Ambient Occlusion in 3ds max 2012

0. Rendering>Render Setup (or F10)
1. Open Assign Render Tab
2. Click the "..." buttons and choose QuickSilver Renderer 
3. Go to Renderer Tab
4. Go down and find the check box that says Ambient Occlusion 
5. Check Ambient Occlusion 
6. Your done...... now render.
